I am continuing my effort to downsize as unfortunately we will have to move all our belongings into temporary storage due to builders carrying out major remediation works to our brand new home.
I’m downsizing my Arklow Pottery collection next, and only plan on keeping a couple of patterns. I have a number of odds and ends and single plates that are now surplus to requirements.
For sale here is a Fabulous Original Vintage Arklow Pottery Noritake Ireland Limited Commemorative Plate from the Inauguration Ceremony, 26th May 1977, The reversed Horse (Hidari-Uma)
This plate is in excellent Mint Condition, having lived most of it’s life in the plastic and original box that it was presented in. The box is completely battered, but still holds the plate currently!
It comes with a little information leaflet about the significance of the symbols on the plate:
“THE REVERSED HORSE (HIDARI-UMA)
In producing this plate with the design of a house facing to the right and with the Chinese character for “Horse” written in reverse, Noritake are maintaining a centuries-old tradition.
For it was the custom for a plate such as this to be the very first item to be fired in a newly built kiln.
The horse is galloping towards the sunrise and to the right and the potters of those days believed that this symbol would bring good luck to the kiln.
Even in these days when there have been many advances in the technology of porcelain production the old tradition remains. Accordingly, Noritake Ireland Ltd. Take great pleasure in giving this, the first Reversed Horse (Hidari-Uma) to be produced in Ireland, to their guests as a symbol of good luck and as an auspicious omen for the factory’s future.”
The plate is stamped on the reverse with Noritake Ireland Limited, Inauguration Ceremony 26th May 1977.
Own a piece of Arklow/Noritake history, these are relatively rare and don’t often come up for sale anymore.
