A possible impending house move has forced me into evaluating all the contents of my attic and some items will have to go, in my effort to downsize. I'm making progress but more random items need to go!
This is a very attractive Vintage SylvaC Cylindrical Flower Vase from the ‘Brickwork’ range, which was in production from the 1960s to the 1970s. The vase is in the form of a tall cylinder and the whole of the outside is moulded to give the appearance of a brick or stone wall in assorted shapes and colours, the most prominent being yellow, orange, olive-green and brown. This highlighted colouration is hand-painted. The base has a raised rim, and within this is the impressed number ‘3812’ and the words ‘SYLVAC MADE IN ENGLAND’.
The vase is in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or pattern loss to the exterior of the vase. The interior could do with a clean-out before it is once again used as a vase It has a height of approximately 6 inches/ 15.5cm and a diameter just under 3 inches/ 17 cm.
SylvaC was a trade name of Shaw and Copestake, a company formed at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. In 1936 the business became a limited company. In 1955, after the constraints of the Second World War, the two existing pottery works in Stoke on Trent were combined on new premises, and this was the beginning of not only a vast change in production techniques, but also changes in the marketing of the SylvaC products. Initially the company was very successful, products having been sent worldwide with 30% of production going abroad. Unfortunately, during the 1970s, there was a steady decline in output, due to the recession and Far Eastern competition, and in May 1982 the company went into voluntary liquidation.
Ironically, since its closure, SylvaC pieces have become highly collectible and this continues to today.
These don’t come up too often in Ireland, so this is your chance to snap up this piece of 1960’s/1970’s retro Kitsch!!!
I also have a Large “Pebbles” range vase available in another ad, pattern number 3358, I'll do a deal if buying both!
