I’m still working on downsizing my collectables and have moved onto some more Willow Pattern and Blue and White Items that are surplus to my collections. I'm making progress but more items need to go!
Here I have a Fantastic Rare Antique Willow Pattern Top Hat Potted Meat Pot, Unmarked to Base but most likely Staffordshire Made and 19th Century
What a fantastic find this was! I had to do my research on this item as I had no idea what it was, but it’s a “Top Hat” style meat pot, for the potted meats popular long ago. It’s quite a small item but they all seem to have been this size, as I suppose only choice expensive meats were potted in small quantities. Most of these pots were produced in the 19th Century, with some still being produced in the early 20th century.
The fact that this example is unmarked on the base is a nod to it being an older example, as wares were not marked/backstamped back in the early to mid 19th century. Definitely an antique item, well over 100 years old.
The Potted Meat Pot is in very good antique condition, considering it is between 100 and 200 years old, with only the expected age-related issues such as crazing and slight discolouration as photographed, and a couple of minor fleabites to the base. This all adds to the character of the piece and confirms its authenticity. The willow pattern is a nice rendition of the pattern, and there is an element of the pattern on the inside base of the pot, only revealed when the pot is emptied, which is a nice touch. The blue is a nice dark “flow blue” colour.
The pot stands just under 2.75 inches/ 7 cm tall, The diameter of the rim (brim of the top hat!) is just under 3.75 inches/ 9.5 cm in diameter.
These rare items command high prices online, due to the combination of their scarcity and their popularity with collectors. I have included photos of a couple of online examples, which will show the good value of this particular piece. Online, expect to pay upwards of €100, (see the photos) not including post, packaging or customs, so grab this bargain!
The perfect addition to a mix and match Blue and White or Willow Pattern collection, it would look fabulous displayed on a kitchen dresser.
It might even start off a side-quest, as a collection of these rare items would make a wonderful display!!
I love this piece, and am reluctant to sell, so I will not be considering any lowball offers on this, as where would you find another one!
