Edith Somerville (1858-1949) and her cousin Violet Martin (1862-1915), collaborated to write sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic tales of Irish life, under the name of Somerville & Ross. Among their best-loved stories are those narrating incidents in the life of Major Sinclair Yeates, Resident Magistrate at Skebawn. Published between 1899 and 1915, these Irish R.M. stories are filled with humour and astute character sketches. Google Books.

This was one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in years, although it won't be for everyone. First off, you should know that there is a LOT of riding to hounds, which to some will become repetitious. But it's always to a valid plot purpose, and the action is skillfully (and often riotously) described. Second, you need to enjoy turn of the 19th century prose. If you do, you'll fine it delightful. The metaphors consistently made me smile, and the humor is beautifully sly, clever and abundant.
Throughout, the characters are varied and well drawn, and the authors had the good sense not to attempt to explain or delve too deeply into the inner workings of Mr. Flurry Knox, the central ally, frequent antagonist, and always on the make horse dealer who figures into almost all of the stories. He remains on the last page as inscrutable to the reader as he is to the main character, personifying the Irish psyche that always seems just beyond the Irish R.M.'s grasp.
