My interpretation of the Nicholson bench, sometimes called the English bench is strong, versatile and can be adapted to suit your own requirements.
This version can be built in approximately 8 hours with about €100 euros worth of materials available from any builders supplier. It does not involve complicated joinery and requires only basic woodwork tools.
It can be fitted with a conventional cast iron woodworkers vice, a handmade wooden vice, or a viceless cleat / holdfast system ( see pictures)
