Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) was MP for Stockton-on-Tees, 1931-45 and Prime Minister, 1957-64. As a result of the Great Depression from 1929 onwards, he published a number of titles, 1931-35, advocating measures he thought necessary to reconstruct the British economy. He was influenced by the views of the economist, John Maynard Keynes (also published by his family firm), which required government monetary and fiscal policies to reduce unemployment and stimulate domestic demand and spending.
