Turkestan is the country of the Uzbeks. Bukhara is the commercial port where these carpets are traded. In Bukhara itself there is no loom. These carpets are still made by families today. The base fabric consists of wool twisted with goat hair. A solid cork wool is used for the knotting material that forms the pile. Both materials are still spun by hand today. the red is colored with madder root.
The Youmud (Jomut) Bukhara is highly valued as it is densely and very finely woven.
The Youmuden belong to one of the largest Turkoman tribes settled east of the Caspian Sea.
