Preceded with dedication from Emily Pilsworth to her dear nephew Thomas Leonard surrounded by colour floral and leaf illustration. Frontispiece and title illustration cw/ tissue guard and numerous beautiful in-text illustrations throughout main text. Superbly bound by Hodges, Foster & Co. Dublin in dark green morocco, cover with elaborate gilt tooling to a panel design with shamrock fleurons enclosing in the centre gilt panel with further shamrocks and half-circle-indented surrounds on title on upper cover, all edges gilt, tooled cover. Design repeated on rear cover without title. Spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands, title in gilt direct in the second, the remainder decorated with gilt shamrocks and lines; turn-ins double ruled in gilt and corner gilt shamrocks; cream endpapers; cream and maroon endbands. Marbled pastedowns. A fine copy, some foxing on free endpapers incl. dedication page, mild foxing on a few text pages, some light wear on cover. Purple ribbon marker.
Can't be sure of date but 1840s-early 1850s is a guess as there's a preface by Thomas Moore and he died in 1852.
Detailed Condition Notes:
There is some mild yellowing/ageing of the paper throughout as shown. The foxing is generally limited to the free endpapers including the dedication page as shown and tissue guard but there is still some mild foxing on a very small minority of other pages as shown. Frontispiece tissue guard is in excellent condition with no folds, creases or tears. There are some scuffs on cover corners and edges in particular on top of spine as shown. Some fading perhaps on spine. Some small pencil hand writing “JXX/04” on last free endpaper.
Measures 25cm high x 19cm wide x 4.5cm thick.
