2.2.1 CANNOT be unlocked unless you use a Sim Solution such as a Gevey or Rebel Sim (Cost Approx €10) OR if you update to 2.2.1 using Pwnage Tool as it keeps the Phone Base Band at 2.2 Level which can be unlocked. The Phone Firmware would be 2.2.1 but the Base Band would be 2.2.

As yours is already on 2.2.1, officially updated through iTunes, it currently CANNOT be software unlocked.

You said that your not sure how old it is, according to wiki it was released on the 11th of July last year so if it's any older its not 3G. Can you confirm when you bought it.
