Vintage La Fonda Armchairs by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller, 1960s

Designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Alexander Girard’s iconic La Fonda del Sol restaurant in New York City, this pair of ‘La Fonda’ armchairs represents a unique intersection of mid-century modern design and commercial interior innovation. Produced by Herman Miller in the 1960s, the chairs feature the distinctive low-profile fiberglass shell with integrated arms, perched on a sculptural cast four-star base.

What sets these particular examples apart is their original burnt orange upholstery, a rich, saturated tone that complements the warmth of teak, walnut, or neutral interiors with ease. The curvature of the shell offers surprising comfort, making these as suitable for daily use as they are for collectors or design purists.

These chairs exemplify the Eames’ mastery of form and function, balancing softness and structure with architectural precision.
