Gerard Genette - The Work of Art: Immanence and Transcendence - Art Theory 1997

The Work of Art: Immanence and Transcendence by Gérard Genette.

What actually makes something a work of art: the physical object, the idea behind it, its performance or the experience it creates?

Gérard Genette explores this fundamental question in a major work of modern aesthetics, bringing together philosophy, literary theory and art criticism.

Rather than concentrating on individual artists, Genette examines what an artwork actually is. A painting exists as a unique physical object, but what about a novel printed in thousands of copies, a piece of music that must be performed, or conceptual art where the idea may matter more than the physical object?

Drawing particularly on Nelson Goodman's philosophy of art, he develops these questions across painting, sculpture, literature, music, performance and conceptual art.

A specialist academic title for students and readers of aesthetics, philosophy of art, literary theory, art history and continental philosophy.
