Antique Edme Samson Paris Cabinet Plate. Meissen Style, Rue Beranger. c.1873 to 1890

A beautiful antique French porcelain cabinet plate by the celebrated Paris porcelain manufacturer Edmé Samson & Cie., dating to approximately 1873–1890.

This finely hand-painted plate faithfully reproduces the elegance of 18th-century Meissen porcelain, featuring exquisite Deutsche Blumen floral decoration with delicate scattered insects, a richly moulded Alt-Ozier (basketweave) border and a hand-gilded scalloped rim.

The reverse bears a modified underglaze blue crossed-swords mark with an “S”, one of the Meissen-inspired marks associated with the Samson factory during the Rue Béranger period. Following the registration of Samson’s trademarks in the 1870s, the factory produced exceptionally high-quality reproductions of Europe’s finest porcelains while using modified marks that distinguished their work from the originals.

Edmé Samson (1810–1891) established one of the most respected porcelain workshops in Paris. Today, Samson pieces are highly collectable in their own right and are appreciated for their outstanding quality, artistry and historical significance rather than simply being copies.
