Georgian yoke-back Windsor armchair

Description

COLLECTION ONLY (Kells, Co Meath)

Georgian yoke-back Windsor armchair (sometimes called a yoke-crest Windsor).

* Yoke-shaped crest rail at the top — the wide curved piece that looks almost like a stretched “moustache”

* Pierced central splat with decorative carving (the ornamental openwork in the middle)

* Spindled back and arms

* Saddle-shaped solid wood seat

* Cabriole front legs ending in pad feet (classic Georgian detail)

* Dark stained hardwood (often elm seat with beech or yew frame)

This style originates in late 18th–early 19th century England (Georgian / early Regency).

These were formal armchairs used in dining rooms, libraries, and studies — sometimes called a “captain’s chair” or “country house Windsor.”

The colour is a rich brown. The lower back has a underside dark brown appearance.
The original colour was a faded dark green with a few scratches. I had it restored toits present colour by a man who does restoration work in the west of Ireland. The work cost €200 at the tim

€350 OFFERED
Good Morning
I have already bought a Windsor chair and want a second - will need to do a little work on yours and need to check colour

@Gill G
Good morning,
I would not sell for less than €400.
I believe the chair to be an original and worth far more. It may be worth taking the chair to a specialist to be assessed.
If you Google Windsor chairs history, it with provide answers. Prior to having the chair french polished professionally, it was green.
In its present state, it is in excellent condition and the subtle hues highlight the smooth detail of the timber.

Good Morning
I would be taking the chair to a restoration specialist and am allowing some funds towards that - I can pop up to view if it suits you today but €350 is the most I can offer
Thank you for your time

I am happy for you to check out the chair.
I am not prepared to go under €400.
If you are prepared to wait I will take it to a restoration person in Meath to value the chair.

@Gill G
Sorry. No.
Just to let you know and save you wasting your time, I will not accept €400.
The final offer is €500.
Also, the antique restoration/ valuation person has not got back to me.
I am unable to travel further afield to get a valuation at present due to recovering from a Cardiac procedure.

Good Morning
May I come and see the chair?
Gill G 3 weeks ago
Just looking over our previous correspondence, you did say you wouldn’t accept under €400 and I have offered €400
I managed to purchase two similar chairs as I am adding to a large kitchen table in my old house so I feel this is a fair offer knowing what I paid for the other two
Best regards
Gill
