Authentic Objekto Paulistano armchair, designed by celebrated Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha in 1957.
A modern design classic, the Paulistano is constructed from a continuous bent solid-steel frame supporting a beautifully simple leather sling seat. The chair is remarkably minimal and sculptural, with the flexibility of the steel and suspended leather making it extremely comfortable.
This example has a black steel frame with warm cognac/red-brown leather, which has developed a lovely natural patina with age and use. The leather remains substantial and supple, with the markings and variations you’d expect from a well-used natural hide. There is some normal cosmetic wear to the painted steel frame.
The original Objekto manufacturer’s label is present on the leather seat.
Approximate dimensions:
70cm W × 70cm D × 82cm H
Seat height: approx. 38cm
The Paulistano is regarded as one of the significant Brazilian furniture designs of the 20th century and is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
A particularly beautiful, understated chair that works equally well as a functional armchair or a sculptural piece of furniture.
