Description:
The first Olympic Games after WWI, full of hope and scoops On April 20, 1920, the seventh Summer Olympic Games opened in a brand new stadium in Antwerp's Kiel. Belgium was assigned the organization as a kind of compensation for the misery that the First World War had caused. During the 1920 Summer Olympics, some 29 countries and 2,626 athletes participated and sports were played in 24 disciplines. The seventh Olympiad was one with many firsts. For example, the Belgian fencer Victor Boin takes the Olympic oath for the first time and the Olympic flag with the five rings is hoisted, with each ring symbolizing a world continent. Pigeons were also released for the first time as a symbol of peace.
