Roman Silver Antoninianus

Description

This is a Roman Antoninianus (a silver double denarius) of Philippus II (Philip II), who reigned as Caesar and then Augustus alongside his father, Philip the Arab, from approximately 244–249 AD.
​The coin is identifiable by the radiate crown (the spikes on his head), which was the standard mark of an Antoninianus.
​Identification Details
​Obverse (Front): Features the youthful bust of Philip II facing right, wearing a radiate crown, draped and armored.
​Inscription: M IVL PHILIPPVS CAES (Marcus Iulius Philippus Caesar).
​Reverse (Back): Depicts the prince in military attire standing left, holding a globe and a vertical spear or standard.
​Inscription: PRINCIPI IVVENT (Prince of Youth). This was a common title for the designated heir to the throne.
