Description:
Domenico Bigordi, known as the Ghirlandaio because he was the son of a craftsman famous for his garland‐like headdresses for women, is considered to be one of the major figures during the Renaissance and the city of Florence at the time of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Around 1480 in particular, he became the de facto official portrait painter of the Florentine high society, thanks to his precise, pleasant and quick style.
He is mainly remembered for his large fresco cycles, including the Stories of St. Francis, commissioned to the artist by the Florentine banker Francesco Sassetti, who had commissioned him to fresco the family chapel in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence.
The altarpiece above the altar Adoration of the Shepherds, painted in tempera on panel, is the worthy completion of his grandiose work.
