In 1989, the Austrian Mint introduced the Austrian Gold Philharmonic coin in a 1 oz and ¼ oz variant. These bullion coins were originally available only in these two sizes for the first two years of production. A 1/10 oz coin was added in 1991, followed by a ½ oz coin in 1994. Through 2001, all Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins were minted with a face value in Austrian Shillings.

Changes to the program occurred twice in the 21st century. First, the face value was switched to Euros when Austria joined the Eurozone economy. Second, these 1/25 oz. coins were added to the series in 2014 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the program. They continue in production today, often with mintage numbers much lower than the other weights.

On the obverse of the coin is the image of the organ inside the Musikverein Concert Hall in Inner Stadt, a neighborhood within the national capital of Vienna. This includes engravings of “Republik Osterreich” and the coin’s weight, face value, metal content, and purity.

The reverse bears the design of several musical instruments, including the French horn, bassoon, cello, violin, and harp. Each of these instruments are used by members of the orchestra. Engravings on this side read simply “Wiener Philharmonkier.”

The Austrian Mint strikes the Austrian Gold Philharmonic for the national government. Although these coins have a face value listed in Euros, their legal tender status exists only within Austria and does not extend to the rest of the Eurozone nations.
