Description

A beautiful, authentic mid-20th-century pedestrian garden gate (circa 1950s–1960s). This isn't just a garden gate; it’s a rugged, stylish piece of architectural salvage that perfectly captures the post-war design era.

If you are tired of the flimsy, hollow-core tubular steel gates sold in modern DIY mega-stores today—which often rust through within a few years—this is your antidote. This is proper, heavy, solid-gauge wrought iron craftsmanship built to survive the Irish elements for generations.

Fascinating History & Design Facts

• The Mid-Century "Suburban Boom" Pattern: This specific gate features the highly sought-after symmetrical double "S" scroll cresting along the top arch and a beautiful central split-scroll medallion panel. This geometry was popularized in the 1950s and 1960s across Ireland and the UK as architectural ironmongery transitioned from heavy, dark Victorian gothic designs to brighter, flowing mid-century modern lines.
• Authentic Industrial Craftsmanship: Unlike older 19th-century gates that relied on brittle cast iron or labor-intensive lead joinery, this gate showcases the mid-century evolution of precision oxy-acetylene forge welding. The solid iron bars are seamlessly fused to the framing, giving it incredible structural integrity.
• Period-Correct Utility Latch: Features the original, heavy-duty forged iron hook-and-plate drop latch. It still drops into place with that incredibly satisfying, heavy, metallic "clunk" that you only get with real, vintage ironwork.
