The 1988 Fender Japan PJR65 Jazz Bass Special PJ Active Contemporary Bass is a modern, high-quality instrument designed for versatile playing, originating from Fender's Japanese production at the Fujigen factory.
Body: Made of Indonesian Camp (a tonewood similar to basswood), providing a lightweight feel with a weight around 3.4 kg. Very light on the shoulders compared to your regular P or J bass.
Neck: Maple with a rosewood fingerboard featuring 22 frets and a 34" scale length, particular fast slim neck on this bass.
Pickups: Equipped with Fender Japan PJ pickups, specifically a Dragster (P-type) and a Hotrod (J-type) pickup, which combine Precision and Jazz bass tones. The Jazz Pickup is quite close to the bridge in comparison to regular bridge position.
Electronics: Active circuitry with controls including a master volume, pickup balance selector, and active treble and bass tone knobs. This allows for flexible tonal shaping suitable for contemporary music
This instrument was part of Fender's "Contemporary Series" aimed at 1980s musicians, it features no pickguard with rear control cavity routing for a sleeker look.
All gold hardware, aged and patina'd. E string tuner is upgraded to period correct Hipshot Gotoh Bass X-Tender drop D tuner (equally aged). Original tuner included.
There are several character lines dints and scratches, which I have tried to capture in the photos, making this a player grade instrument. The control knobs are all original. However, one has lost its capping and rubber grip at some stage down the years.
This instrument was made in limited production in the late 1980s and is today sought after for its vintage yet modern features and high build quality typical of Japanese Fender instruments from that era.
Open to offers.
Would be open to consider trades for a similar vintage/value Japanese or Mexico (Player/Player II) passive P-Bass. Sunburst, rosewood preferable.
