The Folktale of Maeve O’Reagan
Children’s fiction • Irish folklore • Ages 7+ • A5 paperback.

I’m a self‑published author, and this was my second book. It’s a children’s fiction story inspired by Irish folklore, set in the midlands and moving through different eras right up to the 1970s. The tale blends imagination, rural life, and the old stories passed down through generations.

Three children, bored during their school holidays, decide to visit an elderly neighbour, a woman they always found a bit strange and who gave them the heebie‑jeebies. Yet they were fascinated by her too: the old‑fashioned clothes she wore, her unusual manner, and her home with its smoky open fire and no electricity, only a few candles glowing in the corners.

Mary Brennan and her husband Jim loved sharing stories from the past, and they always had sweets for the children. Mary often brought them walking into the woods, where they were captivated by her tales about the fairies. But on this particular day, things felt different. A thick fog had settled, and the children curled up beside the open fire, ready for another one of Mary’s stories…
