The Ipcress File (Len Deighton)

Len Deighton's first spy novel, published in 1962. The story involves Cold War brainwashing and ranges from London to Lebanon and on an atoll for a United States atomic weapon test, and includes information about Joe One, the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb. The story was made into a 1965 film with Michael Caine produced by the James Bond co-producer Harry Saltzman, and a 2022 TV series.

The brainwashing is similar to a shock technique called psychic driving pioneered in the 1950s on unwitting mental hospital patients used and funded by the CIA’s secret MKULTRA program

Deighton said that the book owed a debt to Raymond Chandler, and was inspired by Beat the Devil, an old Bogart-Lorre film.
