Piers and Pheasant have produced their third son Philip, doubtless to become the spit of his great-grandfather. Wakefield is running the local garage and is now engaged to Pauline Lebraux and so has converted to Roman Catholicism. However, he gets a bit carried away and deserts Pauline for the life of a novice monk. She takes the news calmly and decides to follow suit by taking the veil. Alayne discovers the affair between Renny and Clara. Although it is now over, as we have come to expect from Alayne, she is not best pleased! However, the last straw's when Renny, never the diplomat, buys keepsakes from the sale at the Fox Farm. Alayne departs in high dudgeon once again for her aunt's house on the Hudson. However, unknown to all but Alayne, she is carrying the future Master of Jalna.
The uncles have been living at Nymet Crews, the Devon house left to them by their sister Augusta. They return to Jalna for an extended visit, just in time for yet another surprise. Finch and Sarah return from their long honeymoon with a small child in tow. This is Roma, the child of Eden and Minny Ware.
Finch is becoming tired of Sarah's clinging devotion and becomes even more neurotic. Sarah leaves Jalna for the now deserted Fox Farm. However, to get her own back, she plans to foreclose on the Jalna mortgage and turf `em all out but is forestalled when Finch gives Renny the money.
Renny and Adeline go to New York to see what Alayne's up to. What a shock for Renny when he discovers Alayne's condition. What a shock for Alayne when she realises she's loved him all along and what a shock for poor Aunt Harriet when she loses all her money in the Wall Street crash. Brandy and sal volatile all round!
Once again, Renny rides to the rescue and brings everyone back to Jalna.
All's well that ends well when Wakefield leaves the monastry.
