Batman is dying, and since his back was broken, he has become obsessed with the continuing his legacy beyond just himself. Alfred Pennyworth, however, is displeased that his method for extending that legacy is through cloning rather than through nurturing the already enduring legacy that he built over the last ten years in his family. Bruce refuses to let the Batman die, though, and he is intent on stealing something called the Caulder Component that will keep his clones stable. Alfred warns that if Bruce intends to go after it, he will face lethal security measures, and will likely die. Bruce ignores him, donning his much changed Batsuit, and requiring his old friend to man the computers, despite his conscientious objections.

Batman uses a vibrational component of his suit to break into a LexCorp lab, using a recording of Lex's voice to evade the security protocols initiated by his presence in the room. With thirty minutes on the clock, Batman enters a sub-basement where he is greeted by a hologram of Lex Luthor, explaining that while he is impressed that the intruder made it this far, he will soon be dead by either the gas filling the room or the attack drone that approaches. Batman is prepared though, and overrides the room's circuitry to vent the room of the gas and disable the drone. In the next room, he is greeted with another message from Luthor, but he fails to fall victim to its goading, and does not alert the other drones in the room to his presence. Finally, Batman makes his way to a room full of failed clones of Superman. Knowing how much effort Lex has put into ensuring that he is the only one with cloning technology, Bruce intends to destroy the lab so that nothing remains.

Before he can do so, though, he is attacked by one of those clones. By this point, Lex's holographic messaging system has guessed that the infiltrator is Batman, based on his resourcefulness and tragically misguided motivations. Batman's suit begins to fail him, and Alfred warns that he will have to get out of the lab before he dies. Bruce struggles to keep himself alive while being attacked by B-Zero clones, and soon his communications go dark.

Worriedly, Alfred begs his friend to come back, seeing that Bruce's vitals are crashing, and his suit is failing. Somehow, though, Batman returns, crashing through the door, and dropping to the floor with the Caulder Component in hand. Though Bruce collapses, he survives, and within nine months, they have built viable clones. In each one, he activates memory implants containing everything up to the night in his father's study when he decided to become a bat. Bruce explains that whatever happens to him, Gotham will always need a Batman. Forever.
