About 'Record Mirror' Music Newspaper:
The final print issue of Record Mirror was published on April 6, 1991, it's editor at that time stated that “the magazine was taken by accountants rather than people who understand music”.
In it's time the music newspaper's various names included: Record Mirror, New Record Mirror, Record Mirror & Disc, Record Mirror & Radio, Record Mirror with Popswop, RM.
Record Mirror was a British weekly music newspaper/magazine which was first published on June 17, 1954 with Winifred Atwell on the cover.
The first UK album chart was published in Record Mirror in 1956, and during the 1980s it was the only consumer music paper to carry the official singles chart for the UK and UK album charts used by the BBC for both Radio 1 and Top of the Pops, as well as providing the US Billboard Magazine Charts.
It was the first UK music paper to feature colour front covers setting it apart from its competitors on the news stand. On November 16th 1963, the paper featured a colour picture of The Beatles on the cover, this was the first British music paper in full colour. Up to the late 60's the Record Mirror advertised itself as the UK's "largest selling colour pop weekly newspaper". During the late 70's and early 80's the paper's front cover often featured art renderings of famed pop stars.
At it's peak in the 1970's it sold in six figures in the UK alone every week. Record Mirror competed with New Musical Express, Disc & Music Echo, Sounds and, Melody Maker. It had the smallest circulation of the UK consumer music weeklies and was considered by it's peers to be the 'niche audience' and least important of the genre.
Record Mirror was the first national British publication to publish an article on The Beatles and the first to feature The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, The Who, and The Kinks. The Record Mirror was known for its dedication to emerging talent. It often spotlighted up-and-coming artists who would go on to achieve great success. It provided early coverage of acts like David Bowie, Elton John, Queen and U2, helping to cultivate their burgeoning careers. The magazine’s commitment to nurturing new talent made it an essential read for music enthusiasts and industry insiders alike.
Among Record Mirror's star writers of the late-70's/earler-80's was Chris Westwood.
U2 (band members) appeared twice on the cover on this inkie. First on the 10th November 1979 (Larry and Edge) and again on 1st November 1980 (Bono).
Record Mirror gave U2 their magazine first cover outside of Ireland. Said 'inkie' is referenced within several publications, e.g. 'U2 The Early Days', 'The North Side', 'U2 by U2', 'Surrender by Bono', 'U2 The Definitive Biography'. (Please see photographs of said references).
