Having finally got back to Belfast, Kit Ryan picks up a carton of Silk Cut at a shop close to the station. There, she reunites with her sister Claire, who is very happy to see her. Kit - known to her friends and family in Ireland as Kathy - has been away for some time. As Claire drives her into the city, Kit lights up one of the c.i.g.a.r.e.t.t.e.s, and realizes that she can't remember when she started smoking. With plans to go out to the pub later, Kit gets inside Claire's apartment and falls asleep near instantly.

That night, Kit, Claire, and their brother Peter head to the Crown Bar, where their sister Ann and her husband Sean are waiting. Ann has apparently brought a man named Neil with her, who asked Kit out several times before she left, to no avail. Peter has a dark sense of humour, and the antics he gets into while drunk are a source of frustration to Ann, who is the sort of woman who chastises her loved ones for every curse they utter. The siblings share stories, but Kit carefully deflects every attempt by her sisters to ask about her relationship with John Constantine. Clearly, he is still much on her mind, and when she hears her brother utter a remark that John might normally have said, she becomes very uncomfortable and decides to order another round at the bar. While there, though, her emotional confusion causes her to accidentally order a drink for John.

After getting quite drunk, Kit and Claire decide to go up to their parents' old house, as they still have a key. Sean is insistent that they go dancing, but after a sexist joke, Kit secretly bumps the table so that his Bloody Mary spills in his lap. While Sean and company fail to get into the club he likes, Kit and Claire visit their old house. It's been sold already, and the new owners are moving in at the beginning of next week. So, the girls take a moment to remember their lives there, before the opportunity is gone.

Their father had been abusive, and at the end of it, he had nearly killed their mother if Kit hadn't come at him with a bread knife - just as she had done when she was attacked in her home just weeks ago. Free to speak in privacy with her sister, Kit admits that John seemed to love her. He was a good man, but all the dangerous stuff he was into grew until it came for her, and he had promised it wouldn't. At the end, when she had broken it off, John had said a number of things she never had expected to hear from him; the kind of things that made him vulnerable. He had stopped just short of saying he loved her - and it meant a lot to her. She hadn't listened to him, though, and he called her cold - and of course, she had bitten his head off for that.

A knock comes at the door, and it is Neil, who drunkenly stumbles to confess his love for Kit. Sighing, she sends him on his way, and he ends up vomiting on a nearby car. Neil's efforts remind Claire of the old children's song their mother used to sing them about a beautiful Belfast girl who receives a number of suitors.

While Claire slips into a sleepy drunken mumble, Kit stares out the window and wonders if maybe she should never have left John. As the tears run down her face, she hears Claire remembering the final verse of the song, in which the desired girl eschews her many suitors for the one man she had loved the whole time. Kit looks in on her sister and smiles through her tears.
