This is the only complete medal of this type that I have seen. 1950 was designated a Holy year by the Pope in Rome and the GAA sent a group along to celebrate the event, this medal was is one off type striking for the event.
The Historical Context: The year 1950 was designated as a Catholic Holy Year (Anno Santo) by Pope Pius XII. Ireland responded with intense religious enthusiasm, organizing massive national pilgrimages to Rome. Major civic and cultural bodies sent formal delegations, and the GAA organized its own official pilgrimage to Rome for its members and representatives.
