Ww1 militaria French Fundraising Medals.

Description

€35 each 2 for €60.

During WW1, as a way of fundraising, the French Government and other authorised groups organized nationwide days that became known as "Journées". Various medals, pendants, brooches, pins and badges were sold on the particular day to the general public to help raise funds for French soldiers (les Poilus), their wives and children and to help rebuild villages/towns devastated by the fighting. These two particular medals were sold to raise monies for La Journée de Paris in July 1917.

One of the medals, measuring 30 x 28 mm and designed by the French sculptor and medallist Gaston Lavrillier, depicts the conjoined busts of George Washington and General Lafayette during the American War of Independence. The medal commemorates the forces of the USA joining those of the allied nations in 1917. The obverse depicts the profiles of Washington and Lafayette and is very clearly signed at the bottom 'Gaston Lavrillier - Paris-Art'. The reverse bears the legend "Journée de Paris 1917" with the significant 'Independence Day' dates of 4 Juillet 1776 for the United States of America and 14 Juillet 1789 (Bastille Day) for France.

The second uniface medal, measuring 31 x 28 mm, portrays an allegorical female figure representing the City of Paris shaking the right hand of a wounded 'poilu' sergeant with the legend ‘Journée de Paris 14 Juillet 1917’.

Are they silver?

@Anna23 unfortunately I'm just going to say white metal as didn't see any hallmarks on them

With old jewellery they aren’t always hallmarked. If you can find out what they are made of, am happy to buy both from you, especially of they are silver or pewter.
