S (17") is generally suited for riders around 5'3"–5'8" (160–172 cm), depending on proportions, inseam, and riding style (more upright XC vs. aggressive)

Giant Carbon hardtail uses both letter labels (XS/S/M/L)
XS: Often ~14"
S (Small): 17"
M (Medium): ~19"
L: ~21"

17" frame (seat tube around 17 inches / ~43 cm).
