Culloty, A. T. Drinking From The Well. Cork, Desmond Publications, 1993. 14 x 21 cm. 179 pages.
A collection of folklore from the Ballydesmond, Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra regions of Northwest Cork and East Kerry. The author draws on the collection of folklore held at University College Dublin, much of it collected by the Irish Folklore Commission in the 1930s, as well as the living memories of local people. The stories within the book evoke the rich traditions of poetry and music in the region. The oral tradition of storytelling in the Irish language is celebrated through the musicality and lyricism of the language used in the stories. The collection is grouped thematically around such topics as work, the weather, farming, the fairs, cures, death, celebrations and fairies. The book is illustrated throughout with photographs contributed by local people.
