Leonardo Sciascia special edition

Description

'Fables from the Dictatorship' was the debut literary work of acclaimed Sicilian author Leonardo Sciascia. Published in 1950, the slim volume featured a collection of short, Aesopian-style fables that function as a scathing satire on fascism. This volume contains the fables translated into English by Ann Goldstein, an afterword by Sciascia expert Joe Farrell, and an essay by Pier Paolo Pasolini. 68 pages.
Sciascia used traditional fable tropes—often utilizing animals or historical figures to represent societal archetypes—to critique the mechanisms of control, censorship, and submission inherent in authoritarian regimes. Rather than simple morality tales, these fables were designed as biting political allegories to expose the absurdities and horrors of dictatorial rule under the guise of innocent storytelling. The text is notoriously difficult to find in English print, though it has been explored in academic journals and literary critiques. This special edition was produced by the Italian Cultural Institutes of Dublin, Edinburgh and London in 2021 on the occasion of the centenary of Leonardo Sciascia's birth (1921 - 2021) and was launched in an online event in Dublin 30 November 2021 with the participation of Ann Goldstein, Joe Farrell and other scholars.
