On Carrickmines Hill : The Story of Carrickmines Golf Club 1900-2000

Carrickmines Golf Club was founded on 1 August 1900. Located at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, Carrickmines Golf Club has been a beloved spot for golf enthusiasts since its inception. The course was within seven minutes of the railway station on the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway line. The club derives its name from the Irish Carraig Meighin meaning ‘little plain of rocks’.

The club has a rich history, with its original clubhouse designed by Richard Orpen and erected in 1901. Unfortunately, the clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1972, and the new clubhouse was designed by club member George McCaw.

The course was designed by a committee in 1900, with notable contributions from N.M. Hone, Andrew Armstrong, and W.H. Wilson. James McKenna, who was also involved in the design of Lahinch Golf Club, was hired as the first professional until 1908 when he moved to Portmarnock. The club was working on extending the course to eighteen holes when WWI started and the plans were shelved. James Barrett (1908-1950) and his son Jimmy (1950-1984) would take over the professional duties on the course after McKenna.

The course is a 9-hole parkland layout with 18 tee boxes. It offers stunning views over Dublin Bay, the Hill of Howth, Bray Head, and beyond.

The Beckett family had a long association with the club with the head of the family captain in 1914 and the two sons (Frank and the playright, Samuel) were known to enjoy the game. It is suggested that Samuel Beckett’s trouble with insomnia was somewhat alleviated by going through the holes at Carrickmines in his head.
