Graduate of Eton College and received his degree from King's College, University of Cambridge. Ordained an Anglican minister. Taught Greek at Manchester University.

Upon the outbreak of the Great War, despite being older than most men volunteering for service in the military, he volunteered to serve as chaplain in the British Army and was duly commissioned in the Royal Army Chaplains' Department and attached to the 6th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. He had reached the rank of captain by the time he was tragically killed in action during the Battle of the Somme.

Aside from his translations from Greek and his tract on the Epistles of Saint Paul (written while serving in the trenches in France, posthumously published in 1937, and praised by T.S. Eliot), he wrote one piece of fiction - titled 'Beneath the Surface and Other Stories' (published posthumously in 1918) - that has been largely forgotten, but praised by G.K. Chesterton.
