Product Information
The Outsiders is a unique glimpse into the secretive world of Irish travellers where prejudice, crime and a burning loyalty to family, clan and tradition has made the community impervious to external influences. Over a four year period, investigative journalist Eamon Dillon has documented modern Irish travellers. He reveals their worldwide drive to succeed, which often takes them beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour. From Bejing to Texas, Longford to London, Irish travellers have shown an incredible ability to surmount the obstacles of racism, ignorance and physical hardship to become modern day pavee princes who refuse to the bend to the arbitrary rules of a society where they remain 'the outsiders'.
Amazon Review
I very much enjoyed this book, which presents a series of accounts of how various Irish travellers (gypsies) have operated and impacted upon society since the mid-1990s. However, it almost exclusively deals with the criminal exploits of travellers, and in that regard Dillon has done a good job of researching the news clippings over the last 10 or 12 years, presenting a composite narrative which - in essence - says that many members of the travelling community are deeply involved in criminality, ranging from low level break-ins to international dru-g running. It appears to be quite a one-sided narrative, bordering perhaps on the sensationalist in places, and I can't imagine that some of the traveller advocacy organisations such as Pavee Point would be terribly impressed with this book. Indeed, it could have benefitted from some sociological assessment and discussion of the life of the wider travelling community - they can't all be criminals, can they?
