Vintage Petite Akan Akuaba Fertility Doll Ghana African Tribal Art Statue

Description

Iconic and authentic mid-20th century Akua’ba (Akuaba) fertility doll hand-carved by the Akan / Ashanti people of Ghana, Ghana.
According to legend, a woman named Akua who could not conceive was told to carry a wooden “child” — she did, became pregnant, and these dolls have been carried, fed, and honored by women seeking children ever since.
Classic textbook form with large disc-shaped head, ringed neck (symbolizing health & beauty), horizontal arms, small breasts, and rich dark patina from decades of handling and age.
Excellent vintage condition with only more vintage wear to the “extremities” if you look closely that adds character and authenticity no repairs or restoration.
As with many of these there is a pierced hole in the forehead. As explained these were carried around so would have been on a neck chain perhaps as a pendant.
16.5 cm high x 7 cm wide x 3.5 cm deep
Hand-carved tropical wood with natural dark patina.
Perfect for collectors of genuine African art, fertility symbols, ethnographic objects, or as a meaningful statement piece in boho, global, or mid-century modern interiors.
