Athcarne Castle, situated near Duleek in County Meath, was built in 1590 by William Bathe and his wife Janet Dowdall. Constructed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, it was designed as a grand Elizabethan-era fortified manor house, featuring an impressive four-story Elizabethan extension attached to an earlier medieval tower house.

The castle served as the seat of the influential Bathe family for over two centuries. A prominent historical tradition records that King James II stayed at Athcarne Castle in July 1690 immediately following his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne. The estate was subsequently confiscated from the Catholic Bathes in the late 17th century due to their Jacobite loyalties, passing to the Garnett family in the 18th century.

Though heavily altered in the 1830s and mostly demolished in the mid-20th century, a single stone turret still stands today.
