Antique 1923 Sterling Silver & Stepped Malacca Walking Cane Jonathan Howell

For sale is an exceptional, 103-year-old British gentleman’s country walking stick made by the world's premier early 20th-century cane manufacturer.

Details & Provenance:
• Maker: Jonathan Howell (Henry Howell & Co. Ltd, London). Stamped with the authentic 'J.H' inside a shield directly below the hallmarks.

• Silver Mounts: Solid Sterling Silver crook nose cap and lower collar. Fully hallmarked for London, 1923 (lowercase date letter 'h'). Both pieces feature a beautifully crisp, matching 'barleycorn' engine-turned patterned finish.

• Wood Shaft: Genuine Stepped Malacca cane (rattan palm) displaying its iconic vertical grain and natural tiered nodes.

Condition Details:
The cane features the traditional hand-cut horizontal factory relief cuts near the top and bottom of the cane used to safely bend the wood back in 1923. There is an open vertical split running down the upper rind of the shaft following these old stress lines.

Crucially, this split is cosmetic only. The cane remains incredibly rigid, robust, and completely functional. It easily supports a full 12 stone of weight with absolutely zero bending, bowing, or flexing.

An exceptional piece for an antique collector, social history enthusiast, or anyone looking for a unique, functional vintage walking companion with premium British silver provenance.
