Antique French Altar Crucifix with Memento Mori Skull and Crossbones.

This striking standing crucifix features a classical French design that likely dates from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century around 1880 to 1920. The piece is constructed with a warm dark wood inlay set into a substantial nickel or silver plated brass frame which terminates in elegant trefoil or fleur de lis points. The metalwork shows a beautiful aged patina consistent with a century of use and devotion.
At the base of the cross sits a rare bronze memento mori skull and crossbones emblem which represents Golgotha or the Place of the Skull where the crucifixion occurred. Above the finely detailed corpus of Christ is a scrolled INRI titulus. The entire cross is mounted on a stepped wooden plinth that provides excellent stability for display on a mantel or home altar.
The crucifix stands 36cm high with a width of 14cm across the arms and a base depth of 8cm making it a significant and collectible liturgical object. It remains in excellent antique condition with original pins and hardware visible on the reverse side reflecting the high quality craftsmanship of its era. This is a profound and tactile piece of religious history perfect for collectors of ecclesiastical art or those seeking a meaningful centerpiece for reflection.
