For sale is this finely-made medal issued to commemorate the 1925 Holy Year held during the papacy of Pope Pius XI (1922 to 1939). The engraving used to produce this medal was of a very high artistic standard with fine realistic detailing. The obverse side shows an image of the Pope surrounded by representations of the four basilicas within the Vatican City (St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Mary and St. John) along with the text PIUS XI PONT. MAX and ANNO SANTO ROMA 1925. The reverse shows a representation of Saints Peter and Paul with the text S. PATRVS S. PAVLVS.
The 1925 Holy Jubilee Year was proclaimed by Pius XI to promote missionary work, restore human society and encourage a return to holy customs. It began on Christmas Eve 1924 when Pope Pius XI opened the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica and concluded 31st December 1925. This Holy Year placed emphasis on the work of the missions, earning Pius XI the byname "Pope of the Missions".
