A large original oil on canvas by the County Down landscape painter Robert Bertie (R.B.) Higgins (b. 1943), titled on the reverse "Ballyalton, Downpatrick, Co. Down" and dated 1984.
A beautifully detailed Lecale scene, painted in Higgins's finest manner. A rain-washed woodland track runs through the foreground, its puddles catching the light of a vast summer sky banked with cumulus cloud. A woman and child drive their sheep along the lane, while figures gather around a smoking campfire at the edge of the trees. Beyond, a river winds away into a hazy, sunlit distance framed by tall woodland. It's a calm, luminous picture of the Co. Down countryside, full of incidental detail that rewards close looking.
The artist: R.B. Higgins was born in County Down in 1943 and is known for his Irish landscapes in oil and watercolour, and for his porcelain commissions for Belleek Pottery. His work has sold at Whyte's in Dublin and Ross's in Belfast.
