Description

Der babylonische Talmud in Auswahl (Selections of the Babylonian Talmud), by Jakob Fromer & illustrations by Joseph Budko from 1924.

Brandusschen Verlagsbuchhandlung, Berlin; 172 pages. Printed on thick art paper, with illustrated/graphical section headings + 2 page intro. 16 translated selections of Talmud (Proverbs, Brachot, Shabbat, Pesachim, Yoma, Rosh HaShana, Ta'anit, Yevamot, Ketubot, Gittin, Kiddushin, Baba Kama, Baba Metzia, Baba Batra, Sanhedrin, Avoda Zara).

Budko (1888-1940) was famous Jewish-Polish artist who created etchings, engravings & woodcuts. Favorite student of Jewish artist Hermann Struck, director of Bezalel art school 1934-40. Fromer (1865-1938) was Jewish-Polish semanticist & librarian of Berlin Jewish Community who published anti-Semitic article (1904) identifying Judaism's character as source of anti-Semitism & called for its self-destruction. Recognized as an authority on Talmud, this work is said to reflect his ongoing struggle to reconcile his western identity with his traditional background.
