Tibetan Tsatsa plaque

Description

Tibetan Tsatsa plaque

Not sure of age - good aged antique condition

Tibetan portable shrine, also known as a tashi gomang (meaning "many auspicious doors") or chosham (shrine cabinet). It is designed to house small votive tablets called tsatsas.

The small images inside the niches are known as tsatsas in Tibetan Buddhism. These are created by pressing clay into a mold and are considered a form of votive offering, made to accumulate religious merit. The clay for tsatsas can be mixed with sacred substances like ashes of respected lamas or holy water.

: Historically, portable tashi gomang shrines were carried by wandering bards (manips) in regions like Bhutan to confer Buddhist teachings on the masses. The act of creating and placing these tablets in a shrine is a devotional practice believed to eliminate obstacles, purify negative karma, and create positive energy.
