Victorian British Military Horse Martingale Badge - Late XIX

Description

Rare 19th-century British Military Martingale (Horse Breastplate) Badge. This is a heavy, cast brass/bronze piece typical of the Victorian era (circa 1880).

The badge features the "VR" (Victoria Regina) monogram at its centre, surrounded by the Garter strap with the Royal motto: "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (Shame be to him who thinks evil of it). It is topped with the characteristic Victorian St. Edward’s Crown.

These badges were used on the leather harness of cavalry horses or high-ranking officers' mounts for ceremonial and field use.

Condition:
The item is in "as found" condition with a deep, natural aged patina. It shows honest wear consistent with its age. Both original fixing lugs/studs are present on the reverse (see photos).
