Vintage hand-crank coffee grinder

Description

Wooden body with drawer → ground coffee collects in the drawer
• Copper bowl on top → beans go here
• Hand crank with wooden knob → rotates the burr grinder inside
• Ceramic panel with painted flower → decorative European kitchen style
• Stamped “Made in Western Germany”

That last line is historically useful. “Western Germany” only existed between 1949 and 1990, which places this piece nicely in the mid-20th century.

Most of these grinders were produced in Germany, Austria, or France by companies such as:
• Zassenhaus
• Leinbrock
• PeDe (Peter Dienes)
• KyM

Your grinder has the mass-produced decorative style from the 1960s–1970s.

Materials

Typical construction for this type:
• Beech or oak wood body
• Steel burr grinder inside
• Copper or brass hopper
• Ceramic decorative panel
• Steel crank with wooden knob

The mechanism inside is a burr grinder, which actually crushes beans rather than slicing them like cheap blade grinders. Ironically, this old technology still produces better grind consistency than many modern electric grinders.

Age estimate

Because of the “Made in Western Germany” stamp:

Approximate age: 1960–1985

Not antique, but firmly vintage.

Condition notes (from your photos)

Looks fairly good:
• drawer intact
• crank present (important — many are missing)
• ceramic panel not cracked
• normal wear on wood
