Life
William was born in Dungarvan, Co.Waterford around 1888 as a son of methodist Minister Alexander Egan from Co.Kildare and wife Mary Jane.
William also had a sister and 2 brothers. First he was Bank of Ireland clerk in Belfast. During the war his address was given Epworth, Dalkey, Co.Dublin.

Tasked with pushing inland, they faced immediate Turkish artillery fire, suffering devastating casualties due to poor leadership and rugged terrain
