Antique Victorian Rosewood Fire screen – Fine Berlin Woolwork Panel (c.1850)
A beautiful, authentic Early Victorian cheval firescreen, dating to circa 1845–1855.
The frame is crafted from premium solid rosewood, featuring gorgeous, rich natural grain patterns. It is structurally sound and features highly detailed period craftsmanship, including:
An intricate, pierced openwork crest rail at the top. Finely turned side pillars topped with original architectural finials. Elegant cabriole legs terminating in carved scroll feet, joined by a ring-turned central stretcher.
The Textile Panel:
The central framed panel features a stunning, glass covered, textbook example of mid-19th-century Berlin woolwork embroidery on canvas. The detailed floral bouquet (featuring a white rose, passionflower, and mixed botanicals) is meticulously executed entirely in wool cross-stitch. The colors are remarkably vibrant and well-preserved against the solid black background, with no glaring signs of fading.
Condition Note:
The piece is in excellent antique condition overall, with the notable exception that the decorative lower fretwork apron/crest (which originally sat directly underneath the main frame rail) is missing. The mounting holes are visible underneath, but it does not affect the freestanding stability of the screen.
There is also a small chip on the upper crest work, and small chip on the upper left Finial. All details shown in the pics.
