An original mixed media work on paper by contemporary Irish artist Derek Menary (b.1943), created in 2004.
About the Artist
Derek Menary (b. 1943) is an established Belfast-born contemporary painter with a career spanning more than five decades. After studying at Belfast College of Art and Dartington College of Arts, he worked in theatre and television, including with BBC Television Drama Serials in London, before becoming a full-time professional artist in 1990. His background in stage design is reflected in the dramatic structure, texture and use of light that characterise his paintings.
Menary has exhibited extensively throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe and the United States, including exhibitions at the Royal Academy, Royal Ulster Academy, Royal West of England Academy, London Contemporary Art Fair, Geneva Contemporary Art Fair and Miami Art Fair. His work has also been represented by respected galleries including Tom Caldwell Gallery (Belfast), Goldmark Gallery (Rutland), Sandford Gallery (Dublin) and Jonathan Poole Fine Art (London).
Best known for his richly textured semi-abstract landscapes and distinctive Vessel Series, Menary’s work is held in numerous private collections and is recognised for its bold composition, expressive surface and contemporary aesthetic. His paintings appeal to both collectors of modern Irish art and those seeking original statement pieces for contemporary interiors.
The Artwork
This striking composition features three abstract vessel forms set against a richly textured ground, combining paint, charcoal and mixed media techniques that are characteristic of Menary’s highly individual style. The work has excellent depth and texture, with subtle earth tones, turquoise highlights and expressive linear mark-making.
The artwork is signed with the artist’s DM monogram on the front and fully signed “DMenary ’04” on the reverse, which is also inscribed “Mixed Media on Paper.”
A beautiful contemporary piece that would look exceptional once professionally framed.
