We have seen a few Hyundai i30, i40, Santa Fe, Elantra , Sonata with a steering column knock clunk noise problem. This is a common issue.

You might noticed the knocking when turning left or right and would it feel through the steering column. In some cases, the ESP (Electronic Stability Light) light came on after turning or accelerating.

The cause of the steering knock is a star-shaped bush deteriorated, inside the electronic power steering motor. The worn-out bush loses its gears, which stops it from meshing correctly. If left unattended, it can cause excessive wear in the motor, leading to a costly repair.

To fix we remove the dash panels and the steering column assembly. Then, we dismantle the power steer motor assembly, replace the faulty bush and reassemble the vehicle. Next, we test and carry out the reset procedures with a scan tool. Finally, we road test the car to ensure the steering knock is fixed.

We recommend having this repair carried out as soon as possible after you hear the knocking noise. Otherwise, it can cause other issues with the steering column, and jeopardize your safety too
