Antique 1840 Hand-Coloured Engraving - 'Brow on the Solway' (Robert Burns Interest)

Description

For sale is an authentic original 19th-century hand-coloured steel engraving titled "Brow on the Solway", drawn by celebrated Scottish artist David Octavius Hill (D.O. Hill) and engraved by James Appleton, published c. 1840 for The Land of Burns.

Historical Significance:
Brow, located on the Solway Firth in Dumfriesshire, is famous as the site where Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, spent his final weeks in July 1796 attempting to recover his health using the local mineral well and sea bathing. He returned to Dumfries on July 18 and passed away three days later. This print captures the serene rural landscape of the cottage and Solway coastline as it appeared in the early 19th century.
