Slightly reduced size letterpress print taken from J.J. Audubon’s famous double-elephant folio “Birds of America”, which was engraved, printed and coloured by R. Havell in London, between 1827 and 1838, and measuring 39 in x 29in, from Audubon’s original watercolour paintings that are now in the collection of the New York Historical Society, where they were all exhibited for the first time in 1972.
John James Audubon’s handwritten notes across the lower pine needles on his original watercolour painting state that the tree in Pinus inops, (vulgo or common- name) Jersey Pine, and the birds being the Mottled Owl (Strix asio), which was later known as Little Screech Owl.
His original painting only had the two lower birds, juveniles, painted, but he had much earlier, in 1812, portrayed an adult of the same species in pastels, and he cut out and pasted this onto the main watercolour in 1829.
